Transforming delivery internationally
Carillion and our joint venture partner Al Futtaim first moved
into Cairo during 2008 to work on the Cairo Festival City
development, a mixed-use urban community, for Al Futtaim Group Real
The first contract in Cairo was for the construction of the Retail Mall which had an initial construction value of EGP 2.05Bn and a programme duration of 40 months completing in November 2013. The whole development covers 3 million square meters and is adjacent to the Cairo Ring Road and at the entrance to New Cairo City.
The development has over 300 shops, 95 restaurants and cafes, and provision for a 17 screen multiplex cinema. The car parking provision is in excess of 7,000 spaces. In addition, we constructed as part of the Mall, the first Ikea in Africa.
In 2010, Carillion Construction was awarded a second contract in Egypt for the site wide infrastructure at Cairo Festival City. This contract, EGP 1.38Bn was procured with funding via the UK Export Credit. Carillion's joint venture with Al Futtaim (AFC) supported the contractor as a sub-contractor.
The Infrastructure comprises of all underground utility networks, including sewage water, irrigation, gas, fibre optics, medium voltage, low voltage, force main and 14 km of road works with street lighting and landscaping including a 500m cut and cover boulevard tunnel. A separate sewage and water pumping station were constructed along with a district cooling plant and associated distribution pipework.
Future opportunities in Egypt are significant and exciting with other private international developers seeking to bring further new and exciting projects to the market in the country.
